How Ferrovial Construction deployed R-Link to evolve its approach to operations and collaboration

Since 1952, Ferrovial has been at the forefront of global infrastructure and mobility operations. Their business has focused its efforts on large projects for society including highways, airports, construction, and city services, and remains dedicated to developing innovative, sustainable solutions that make a difference to the people who use them.

From toll roads to airports, energy, and construction, Ferrovial has over seven decades of experience in creating spaces designed to connect people and “meet the needs of an interconnected world in constant movement.”

Ferrovial prides itself on being “entrepreneurial by nature,” and on keeping collaboration and innovation at its core. That’s why a partnership with Ferrovial Construction to deploy R-Link’s proximity detection technology at their ongoing partnership at Heathrow Airport was a natural choice for both companies.

R-Link is more than a tool for workplace safety. It’s a future-focused solution for connectedness

Much like the infrastructure that Ferrovial builds and maintains, the technologies that Reactec deploys are designed to support more than day-to-day operations: they’re designed to support - and enhance - connectedness, both now and for the future.

Like a highway or airport designed to accommodate society for decades to come, Reactec’s R-Link was built to support the ways that teams work together today in order to promote better outcomes tomorrow. This includes keeping communication, access to insight, and ease of use at the forefront of R-Links’ design and capabilities.

With clear alerts, automatically generated analytics reports, and a familiar-feeling User Experience, R-Link is purpose-built to easily help teams uncover patterns, identify areas of risk, and unlock opportunities for improvement. In the moment, R-Link’s proximity warning system can help any user to more easily avoid danger from moving hazards in real-time, but the real power of this solution lies in how it empowers employers to truly understand their workers’ exposure to risk, and how it enables them to take better control of it.

This future-focus is only possible with a holistic approach to proximity warning technology that incorporates effective alerts, robust technology, and comprehensive reporting. R-Link was designed with each of these tenets in mind and, as a result, over 14 thousand workers across nearly 1400 businesses in the UK and beyond have adopted Reactec’s technologies to help them future-proof their operations and take a prevention-based approach to workplace risk; including - most recently - the team at Ferrovial Construction.

Ferrovial Construction implemented R-Link to elevate operations and proactively approach worker health and safety

Ferrovial Construction's ongoing partnership to manage assets and deliver improvements at Heathrow Airport spans 15 years. This means that the team possesses a great deal of knowledge and experience which make operations run smoothly, complacency among longer-serving employees and contractors. Recognising this potential area of risk, Senior Project Manager, Alberto de Fuentes and Head of Safety, Bill Mitchell - concluded that incidents involving people and plant could be avoided with the implementation of advanced, easy-to-deploy proximity warning technology.

To test R-Links proximity detection technology and determine whether it was the right solution for them, the team underwent a two night-long trial. On Night One, the team wore R-Link watches but turned the audible and haptic notifications off.

Though the watches did not alert employees to dangerous proximity, they still collected data regarding incursions for the time that they were worn.

On Night Two, a different team wore the watches with the notifications switched on, and the teams were instructed to follow the prompts from R-Link to move away from proximity hazards in a safe manner.

When the data from R-Link and Reactec’s Analytics was analysed, the results were clear: between the two nights, the alerted workers recorded 82% less incursion time than the unalerted workers for the same type of operations.

Following the trial, Project Director Ignacio Lopez Araiz, decided to implement R-Link across the worksite at Heathrow Airport in support of Ferrovial’s prevention-based approach to health and safety. Of the decision, Araiz remarked, “Our deployment of R-Link will bolster our safety procedures and will reduce our risk of incident and accidents.”
