R-Link: Proximity Warning System

Why R-Link's proximity warning system is vital to your risk management

Technology designed to create safer and more predictable workplaces shouldn’t get in the way of getting the job done. Technology designed to facilitate workplace safety should also unlock opportunities for enhanced efficiency, and greater productivity.

Reactec’s advanced proximity warning system was built to effectively address accidents involving proximity hazards in the workplace, without slowing down operations. With key considerations baked in - such as the R-Link Driver Watch, which allows machine operators or controllers to grant access for safe close quarter working - this system was designed to reduce risk without compromising speed, or restricting flexibility.

R-Link Proximity warning system - a need-to-have, not a nice-to-have

For over two decades, Reactec has brought cutting-edge workplace risk management systems to forward-thinking teams throughout the UK, and beyond. Our mission is to help organisations engineer risk out of the workplace with technology that powers essential data-driven decision making. Put simply: we’re committed to building systems that give you the information you need to create safer, healthier workplaces.

In 2022, Reactec launched R-Link, our third-generation workplace wearable for multi-health risk prevention. R-Link helps teams to monitor, manage, and mitigate risk from Hand Arm Vibration, dust, noise, and dangerous workplace hazards.

In particular, advanced proximity warning systems are key to creating a safer, healthier workplace. People-plant interface is the top fatal injury in construction, while there are over 1,300 forklift accidents occurring every year in the UK alone. This is a risk to worker health and safety that simply cannot be ignored.

Fortunately, with the right systems in place, these incidents can be avoided. Inadequate planning and control has shown to be the root cause of many failures to comply with workplace regulations that govern the interaction between people and vehicles, like forklifts. But with a more modern approach to managing the risk from people-plant interface, workplaces can become safer, and resulting injuries can be reduced.

What is a modern approach to proximity warning technology?

Prediction, not just prevention: Good proximity warning systems are those designed to effectively prevent workers from getting dangerously close to moving vehicles, equipment, or restricted areas without interrupting or delaying business operations.

But a truly modern proximity warning system goes one step further. The R-Link proximity warning system goes beyond smooth and effective prevention, and provides teams with the real and relevant knowledge they need to future-proof their workplace.

With insights from Reactec’s powerful analytics platform, duty holders and managers can track worker behaviour and provide invaluable information about the who, where, and how often of near misses and incidents. Armed with this invaluable knowledge, teams can better plan for the future, addressing bottlenecks or hotspots proactively, and working to improve controls earlier.

Technology as dynamic as your workplace: A modern approach to proximity warning systems is also purpose-built for a dynamic workplace. One-size-fits-all technology isn’t responsive enough to meet the demands of today’s teams, and the need for flexibility and customisation in these systems is clear.

Historically, a challenge with proximity warning systems has been allowing certain workers to get close to moving vehicles and equipment, and not others. That’s why R-Link was designed to allow for different credentials to be given to different individual workers. This means that some workers will be able to get closer to specific areas or hazards. For drivers, specifically, the Driver Watch is configured so that no alerts are triggered when they are operating their vehicle or equipment, and allows the driver to allow other workers to get close to such hazards when necessary on an instantaneous, case-by-case basis.

With this level of adaptability, R-Link is clearly uniquely positioned to help teams as they strive to create safer, healthier workplaces - now and for the future.

The future of proximity warning systems is here

Today’s workplaces can’t be effectively supported with yesterday’s solutions. It’s time to modernise your approach to proximity warning technology. With a flexible, fast system that’s designed to help keep your workers safe and healthy - both today and for the
future - R-Link is proven to help teams work more effectively.

At Heathrow Airport - one of the busiest in the world - construction crews on the ground used R-Link to ensure their safety from moving vehicles during night-time runway repairs, with great success: Following a successful trial with airport nightshift teams - one using R-Link and one with alerts switched off - the alerted workers wearing the R-Link watch recorded 82% less incursion time than unalerted workers.
